You don’t need to pay to play!
High School summer opportunities are important, but you don’t need to pay-to-play.
Colleges like to see students develop their skills by challenging themselves. Participation in summer endeavors demonstrate a student’s motivation and productivity.
Many families end up spending a significant amount of money on summer college courses, adventures abroad, or even research opportunities for their students. While each of these have merit, they are often only accessible to families with disposable income.
This is why getting a job will be just as impressive to admissions officers. Real world work experiences such as a cashier, a camp counselor, lifeguard, or an unpaid internship help students develop and improve life skills such as: problem solving skills, team building skills, leadership instincts, interpersonal communication skills, creativity, and more.
By participating in all kinds of summer opportunities, including summer jobs, students are demonstrating their drive and willingness to learn. And that’s what counts!
